Getting the most out of your styling session

For many people, especially men, shopping for clothes can be a grueling ordeal. Endless rows of racks, unfamiliar brands, less than helpful staff… it’s no wonder personal stylists have become an increasingly vital resource for overwhelmed shoppers. An appointment with a personal stylist can help you make the most of your time and ensure a successful shopping trip. Working with a stylist is a pretty straightforward process: we’ll figure out your wants and needs, show you a range of options, and guide you to the choices that will improve your wardrobe. Here are just a few simple tips that will help guarantee the most rewarding experience.

  • Bring pictures. Did you see a celebrity wearing a great suit on TV or a cool jacket in a magazine? Show us! Your style inspiration can be an easy starting point for a wardrobe update. Maybe we can take the double breasted suit you saw on Instagram and show you how to pair it with a variety of shirts and ties, or a turtleneck, or split the jacket with a separate pair of trousers.

  • Tell us what you like—and what you don’t. Too many guys seem to think shrugs and grunts are all the feedback we need to put together the perfect wardrobe. We’ll get your look dialed in much faster if you’re vocal about what works and what doesn’t. If you love pinstripes, say so; we’ll put together plenty of options. Hate loafers? That’s fine, we’ll quit wasting time with them. You aren’t going to hurt our feelings, so help us help you.

  • Show us everything you try on. We need to see items on you to evaluate fit and recommend adjustments. For example, clients will often complain that trousers are a little loose without realizing that they’re easily tailored to a perfect fit. We can quickly add or subtract options after seeing which items are fitting you best, so you’ll get better results if you don’t just hide in the fitting room.

  • Be open minded. You made a styling appointment for a reason, so be willing to take some advice and try something new. Yes, we’ll probably ask you to try on a few pieces that are a bit outside your comfort zone. That’s what stylists do! The goal is to help you find modern, fashionable, comfortable clothing that suits your individual style. You might be surprised to discover that your favorite items are the ones you would never have tried on your own.
